5 reasons Israel has never committed a genocide in Gaza

Since October 2023, Israel has continuously faced international condemnation for how it has prosecuted its war in Gaza. It has been accused of committing genocide in Gaza since October 7th and in some cases even BEFORE October 7th. I present five reasons this cannot be the case,

A. Population trends

The population trends in the Gaza strip shows that the population has continued to grow. It is on an upward trajectory. This is not what we would expect from a population which is being ethnically cleansed or genocided. For comparison, let us look at the population of Armenia, where a real genocide has been going on for centuries now

Do you see the difference? This is a declining population, which is expected given the non-stop Armenian genocide being carried out even till date. The trends reflect this.

And again in context of the well attested case of the Rwandan genocide, we look at the population trends.

Rwandan population is also on an upward trajectory save for a little blip between 1990 and 2000. The Rwandan genocide took place in 1994 which is consistent with where the blip is. When it comes to Gaza however, it is a smooth upward curve.

As an aside, according to the world population review between 2024 and this year 2025, the population in Gaza grew by 22,771.

B. Measures taken by the IDF

Despite the criticism of Israel at every turn in this war, we are aware of the steps the IDF takes to minimise civilian casualties. They designate safe zones, distribute leaflets giving advanced notices on where they are about to operate as well as where civilians ought to go to be safe. They also provide aid to the civilians which HAMAS steals and then sells at exorbitant prices to their own population.

C. The testimony of experts and studies conducted

John Spencer, who is an expert in modern urban warfare after acknowledging the uniqueness of the war in Gaza. It is one where the opponent hides behind civilian infrastructure and seeks the deaths of its own civilians as part of its strategy in the war. In spite of this, John Spencer states that the ratio of civilian to combatant deaths is approximately a two to one ratio, which is not in anyway suggestive as a genocide.

Further corroborating this, the study performed by Andrew Fox of the Henry Jackson Society points out that Hamas does not distinguish between civilian and combatant deaths. They also found that-

  • About 5,000 natural deaths were added to the war death toll
  • Men were recorded as women to inflate the number of women on the death toll
  • Adults were recorded as children which inflates the number of children on the death toll
  • The ages of casualties were reduced which watered down the overall average age.
  • When analysing the actual data of deaths, the casualties were disproportionately fighting aged men between 15–45 years old which contradicts the claim civilians are being disproportionately targeted.
  • As at the time of the study, the death toll was reportedly 40,000 and there were about 17,000 of these were combatants.

Now following the findings of these study, we can calculate a ratio. If we reduce the 40,000 by 5,000 for natural deaths, we have a casualty number of 35,000. out of these 35,000 casualties, there are 17,000 combatants, so we are looking at a one to one ratio here. Even using the 40,000 HAMAS figures, if there are 17,000 combatants among them, we are looking at a two to one ratio which is exactly what John Spencer, the modern urban warfare expert suggested the ratio is. This again is not suggestive of a genocide going on in Gaza.

D. Gaza is on the brink of famine

The United Nations have been telling us Gaza is on the brink of famine since October 2023. This famine has still not materialized.

Secondly, there was a UN warning that 14,000 babies could die in 48 hours if aid did not reach Gaza. As preposterous as this report was, it was spread by the mainstream media even directly causing the death of two Jews gunned down in front of the Israeli embassy in the US.

Needless to say 14,000 babies have not died in Gaza as we speak and the famine Gaza has been on the brink of has still not come. There is also no proof Israel is starving the innocent civilians of Gaza.

E. Comparison to Hezbollah and Iran

Hezbollah for years had been touted as one of the most formidable terrorist organisations in the Middle East. They are organised, well funded and well trained. It took one week for Israel to wipe out their leadership and cripple the institution with some pagers and targeted strikes.

We have seen with our eyes how it has taken about two days to deal grievous blows to the IRGC and the Iranian Islamic regime. At this rate, it would be surprising if it took more than two months to complete the job they have started.

The point is, if Israel really wanted to genocide Gaza as the media claim, or if they really wanted to prosecute the war with Hamas with no regard for civilian casualties, this war would have been finished ages ago, Gaza is smaller than Elon Musk’s bathroom. The only reason the war continues to drag on is because they are being as careful as possible against an enemy that hides behind its civilians and wants them dead.

In conclusion, it has become fashionable to hate Israel and Jews, Andrew Fox’s study referenced above also pointed to disproportionately unfair (and dare I say anti-Israeli) reporting in the media. There is nothing I can say to change the minds of such people. However, one thing that cannot be said is that Israel is not committing a genocide in Gaza, either that or they are just terrible at this genocide business.
