I think the better approach is to ask questions. Why are the things being complained about bad in an atheistic worldview? I am interested to know if there is any solid grounding for the atheist's moral judgment or if it is all opinion. If there is grounding, what is it? If there is no grounding, why should I care what they think?
The moment you start explaining the problem of evil to an atheist, you are allowing them to sneak theistic morality through the backdoor which is a massive concession.
