That's untrue my friend,

The preceding verse was Thomas asking Jesus,

"Lord, we do not know where YOU are going and how can we know the way?" (Jn 14:5)

And Jesus as a direct response to the question answered "I AM way, the truth and the life."

It's about Jesus, not consiousness.
